Situated near the village of Gorslas, Llyn Llech Owain Country Park spans approximately 73 hectares (180 acres) and is managed by Carmarthenshire County Council. The park’s centerpiece is a picturesque lake surrounded by a peat bog, a habitat designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique flora and fauna.
Visitors can explore a network of well-surfaced footpaths, many of which are accessible to wheelchair users. A specially constructed path allows safe access over the peat bog and around the lake, providing opportunities to observe the diverse wildlife, including various bird species such as snipe, reed bunting, and little grebe.
The park also features an adventure playground suitable for children of all ages, with separate areas designed for toddlers and older children. For cycling enthusiasts, a forest track offers a longer hike or bike ride around the country park, and there’s a rough mountain bike trail for more adventurous cyclists.
The Discovery Tower visitor centre stands beside the lake, offering splendid views and housing exhibitions about the park’s management and natural history. Facilities include a café, picnic sites, and toilets, all with provisions for disabled visitors.
Once home to Wales’ most celebrated poet, the Boathouse overlooks the Taf Estuary and offers visitors an intimate look at Dylan Thomas’s life, work, and the landscape that inspired him.
